Artistic Activities For Parents And Children in The Minneapolis-St Paul Area

Created to Grow is an arts center that provides creative education in the form of instructor lead art classes and guided open studio creativity. Parents and young children grow as they create art projects together. Located at 2904 Pentagon Dr in St Anthony, we look forward to joining our neighbors in the St Anthony shopping center to continue providing a great destination for families in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Areas.

Activity Descriptions

This series of  classes are based off of wonderful children’s book that relate to artistic concepts. These classes will be structured in a large motor to fine motor progression. We will start with the inspiring story and the introduction to the art concept, do a gross motor movement activity, a small motor collaborative activity, create our individual works of art and finish with a gallery walk. Any remaining class time will be there for you and your children to explore the open studio or play in the play room.

Visual art is often thought of in terms of sitting at a stool or standing at an easel and focusing on making a single project. Lots of our youngest child and toddler artists aren’t ready for this kind of focused class so Artists on the MOVE provides a balance of movement and focused project. For example, we could learn about lines by following a big tape line that zigs and zags and loops around the room with different types of movement and then create a variety of lines using small tape paper on a paper. Each class will alternate something to do and something to make in short segments for those who need to keep a faster pace. The last 15 minutes will be a chance to explore the studio on your own or play in the playroom or a little of both.

Our Wednesday classes will include learning about a culture from around the world and the art that is made there. We may read stories, sing songs or dance and view examples of the art from the country we are traveling to. We may have visitors to the class that teach us about their culture and share their own art. Each class you will be part of a creative project that reflects on the culture that we learned about.
Humans are inspired by many, many things, but the popularity of our museums and appreciation of the art that has gone before show that observing is a great way to kick starts the creative process. Stop in with your child and discuss a master work and the techniques you see and then use the open studio to experiment with the inspiration in mind. (geared towards 2-5th graders)
There are so many objects in our daily life that can be re-purposed into art to save them from the landfill or even the recycling plant (as good as recycling is reusing is even better). There is no end to what you can do with containers, boxes, newspapers, old phone books, discontinued fabric samples, and the list goes on. Each week’s class I’ll be scouring my world for objects that may gain new beauty through art and gathering them together for families to create together.

For the artistically confident parent who love to create with their children but don’t have the space (or doesn’t want the mess) in their own home. Created to Grow will begin these classes with a story and an art idea or two, but the studio will be open for you and your children to explore the available materials, create your own artwork or a play room full of toys to play with during that time. We’ll end each hour with a gallery walk to see what families are creating in their time together!
